Should I Keep Knocking?

Friends have said to me, "I don't know if I should ask God for this particular thing because I feel selfish or stupid for asking for something so big or so small." I'm telling you right now that it doesn't matter what you're asking Him for, if you keep knocking at that door, if you truly believe something should be yours, he is going to answer.

You imagine this life for yourself and you want things to occur the way you want them to, but in reality God's going to do it his way and when he wants to do it. A key in wondering if you should keep knocking at these doors in life is patience. I've said it a million times and my friends know this about me- my undoing is my impatience. I'm sure everyone has regretted something that has happened in their life and said, "If only I would've been more patient."

You cannot just ask him for something and wait on him. It's called a relationship for a reason. You can't just go to him when you want something. It's the good, bad, and the ugly. You can't ask once and expect him to answer tomorrow. You talk to him and pray about constantly. If you want something so badly, e.g. a promotion, you will keep on knocking because you firmly believe that job should be yours.

What I've learned is that things will happen in a way you did not expect. The feeling of receiving something you've wanted so badly and recognizing that God's hand was in it is the best feeling; He never left you, he heard you, he watched you- this strengthens your faith.

A more important question: when should I stop knocking at a particular door? Honestly, I do not have an answer for that. You can't put God in a box. You can't put a time frame on things; you do that and you're setting yourself up for failure and it shows impatience with him. All I can say is keep knocking at doors that you do not want closed or that you believe should be opened. If one door closes, another one opens. Everyone's heard it over and over- God's timing is perfect, and I'm still learning that, but he gives us pieces to cling onto telling us he's with us and he hears us.

Verses:

“So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened." Luke 11:9-10

"Whoever is patient has great understanding, but one who is quick-tempered displays folly." Proverbs 14:29
